Q & A: Is Short Natural Hair More Fun Than Long Natural Hair?

1.5 Years Natural

Q: Ebony, you've been natural for quite  sometime now. Do you enjoy your longer natural hair more than your short natural hair?

T. Logan

A: T. Logan, that's a great question. Honestly, sometimes I don't know. I love having longer hair sometimes because of laziness. I can always just pull it back. However, I do love my twist outs more because they're easier to maintain. I don't have to keep re-doing my styles because  one side is smashed or the definition is better on one side vs the other. When my hair was shorter, it was indeed much more fun and spunky...although I never really did much (other than twist outs, wash n goes, fro-hawks). One might say I was a tad boring with my hair. I do love my length because of convenience, and I do feel like some sort of hair goddess! LOL! :-)

ONE THING THOUGH: I miss the definition of my shorter hair. The longer it gets, the heavier it gets. My curls have now settled toward the bottom and the top is more wavy...I HATE that. So, not many wash n goes for me. :-) Eventually I will cut at least half of it for that reason alone. Thanks for asking Love. Smooches!

  1. You said your top is more wavy now. Has you ever tried other styling options like rollerset instead of twist out? Won't it give ur curls more body?

  2. I've tried a roller set in the past, but it takes forever to do at this point. I DO like "cultivated" curls. However, I'd prefer them to be there on their own. You know what though? It just happens on the top layer of my hair. Even when my hair was shorter, that area was always looser than the rest. MUCH looser. I'm itching to cut it, but I'm trying to resist!!!!! LOL!

  3. I don't know if u like layers, but recently i cut some layers in the crown and i keep my length but hair was curlier due to the shorter layers.

  4. YES! Layers would be my first choice. I haven't had layers in a while, but that would probably be what I'd opt for...unless I'm feeling bold that day. ;-)

  5. I would love my hair to be bit weavy on the top layer of my hair. My curls start straight from top. It's really difficult to make the front lay down a bit. Any ideas?

  6. Try this: While in the shower, cleanse, condition and detangle. At that time, direct your hair however you like...Add your products while your hair is sopping wet in the shower. During your application, smooth down the areas you'd like to be more wavy. Allow it to dry that way and Avoid touching it. That should make your hair behave...not sure if it'll be wavy, but it's worth a try. Let us know how it works! :-)

  8. Sorry it took me longer to report about my co-wash and smoothing down the top areas to get them wavy. I did that and I put some duckbill clps on the part I wanted to be wavy and the result was great. Little more practice on that and I'm sure I'll get to my perfect twist outs. Had my first Henna experience this week after reading how great it is for hair I gave it a try. Have you ever Hanna your hair?

  9. Heyyyy!!! I'm glad you liked your results!

Yes ma'am, I have used henna. My first experience was when I went natural the first time in 1999/2000. It was a disasterous mess and I had henna everywhere! Lol! To top it off I didn't see any results either. The second time around was much better...and less messy. I was actually thinking about doing it again soon.
